Bio-polymers can be referred as either Bio-based polymers or Bio-degradable polymers. These are two totally independent different ideas.
(1) Bio-based polymers(or plastics) are derived from renewable resources such as corn, sugar cane, or cassava, which contain high levels of sugar or starch to be fermented into bio-based polymers such as PHBV, or into bio-based chemicals for further polymerization into bio-based polymers such as PLA.
(2) Bio-degradable polymers can be bio-based polymers or traditional petroleum-base polymers as long as they can be degraded into simple components in nature or composting conditions in reasonable time.
The urgency of reducing Global Warming, CO2 emissions, and the reliance of fossil fuels greatly needs our attention.
The waste or disposable products from Bio-Degradable materials can be used as fertilizers for plants; it can also reduce CO2 emissions, slow down global warming effects, which allow us to achieve our ultimate goal of making the environment greener.
In recent years, the cost of fossil fuels has increased dramatically, and the resources of fossil fuel have become scarce. Bio-Degradable materials will be the focus towards the next generation of thermoplastic applications.
Some traditional plastics can be harmful to our bodies through either direct or indirect contact, which could have serious harmful affects to our health.
Bio-degradable materials have many similar characteristics to traditional plastics, it even possesses similar mechanical properties, these products can be reused, recycled and more importantly it is Non-Toxic. If needed, plates, cups and utensils made of Bio-Degradable materials can be disposed along with food waste which can be fermented and degraded into fertilizers in a short period of time.
